The HR & IT Partnership

How strong is your HR and IT partnership?

For every organisation, and every HR function, the relationship between HR and IT is critical. The strength of this partnership doesn’t just influence your tech - it determines the success of your technology solutions and shapes your entire digital transformation journey. Just as the technology is the enabler - not the whole solution, this partnership is your foundation. It’s what underpins successful, sustainable and tech-enabled change.

In my upcoming book High Impact HR, I share the full approach and tools

behind these principles. It's available for pre-order here.

In our AI-accelerated, disrupted, digital world, the pace of change is faster than ever before. And in a world of exponential technological advancement, the human side of digital transformation matters just as much as the tech. Trust, shared ownership and strong relationships across both functions are what makes change stick.

Yet in too many organisations, HR and IT operate side by side - not together. There are meetings, good intentions and surface level cooperation - but no shared mindset. Teams approach challenges from different angles, shaped by different priorities and ways of thinking, without a common language to bridge the gap. And when this happens, even the best tech fails to deliver.

Successful, tech-enabled transformation doesn’t happen by accident. And it’s never just about systems - it’s about what’s possible when we build the right foundations. It requires true partnership, and not only on the big system implementations, but in your day-to-day work too. It means building a real connection between your functions - at all levels, enabling each other’s strategies and shaping the future together. It means blending your expertise to co-create the solutions that your people and organisation really need. Because together, you can build what neither function can create alone.

The HR and IT partnership isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s the foundation of sustainable, tech-enabled transformation. When it’s strong, it’s seamless. And when it’s missing - it shows. So, have the conversations, build the trust, create a shared vision. And move forward together.

Here are my six strategies to build a partnership that delivers real business impact:

1. Understand your reality

Think about how your functions are operating right now. Are you truly aligned and playing on the same team? Or are you working separately, only coming together when you really need to? Understanding your reality is the first step in building a partnership that delivers.

2. What you do everyday matters

A true partnership is much more than regular check in meetings or collaboration by default. It’s how you work together to align your roadmaps - and your functions. From discovery to design, through to delivery and beyond. And the everyday ways of working matter just as much as the big moments.

3. Play on the same team

Bringing both functions together to work as a team blends functional expertise with diversity of experience and thought. This unlocks much richer insight and enables you to shape solutions that neither function could create alone.

4. Be the change you want to see

Showcase the mindset, behaviours and ways of working that you want your partnership to stand for and blend the best of both worlds. Create an environment where trust runs deep, where people feel safe to speak up, and where collaboration is what you do every day – not just when there’s a joint deliverable. True partnership starts with us all.

5. Create shared ownership

A true partnership means a different kind of commitment. This means building trust and working as one team - not necessarily structurally, although that might be right for your organisation. It’s about aligning behind both functional and shared goals to enable your people, your tech and your organisation. When this commitment is in place, the difference is visible.

6. Business impact first

When digital transformation is done right, it doesn’t just improve workflows. It builds belief, unlocks momentum and makes what once felt impossible - possible. Keep your shared purpose, your people and your business outcomes at the centre, and use this foundation to shape your path forward - together.
