The Change Challenge

Change is now constant. If we’re not changing, we’re not evolving and in a world that’s moving fast, standing still just isn’t an option. If we want to deliver real value to our people, business and customers, and stay ahead, we have to evolve, adapt and grow. And that means change - often complex, challenging, and time-consuming. But essential. Without it, our organisations fall behind. Because if we don’t deliver, our competitors will.

Yet while the pace of change accelerates, the appetite within our organisations doesn’t always keep up. Change fatigue is real. Many people feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or cynical when faced with yet another transformation. People are tired of change that lands on them rather than with them - tired of being told what to do without understanding why it matters. If we try to push change through without the right foundations it won’t stick. Our people will resist, disengage or quietly opt out.

In my book High-Impact HR, I share the full approach and tools

behind these principles. It's available here.

The Problem with Enforcing Change

People get really tired of being told what to do. I know I do. Top-down mandates, rigid directives, and “because leadership said so” approaches belong in the past. They might create short-term compliance, but they rarely create real commitment - or lasting change.

When change is enforced, people disconnect. They’re not included in the journey. And when that happens, the energy needed to drive it evaporates. You get resistance, disengagement and surface-level compliance. It feels like being done to, not part of. You end up pushing people through change rather than building momentum, and in organisations, this kind of change just doesn’t stick.

The Power of Inspiring Change

If we want our people to get onboard, we need to make the shift from trying to enforce change – to inspiring change. We have to give them a reason to want to change. We need to be transparent. Show them the vision and the plan. Let them be a part of it. We need to give them time – not just land it on them. People need to absorb and process, to ask questions.

The best change approaches build over time, change that moves with us, evolves as our organisation, our needs and our people evolve. And we need to adapt our change approach to our people’s responses – we need to listen, adjust and refine – to ensure it lands. Inspiring change is about being honest, clear and intentional. It means creating a clear and compelling sense of direction – one people want to be part of. Helping people see the value and giving them a role in shaping what comes next.

Your Communication Strategy is the Differentiator

The final, critical ingredient in successful change is communication. Your comms strategy is just as important as the change itself and can mean the difference between change that lands and embeds - or passes your organisation by. If your people don’t see it, feel it, or believe it, the changes won’t stick.

How you communicate change is critical. Infographics and visual summaries are incredibly powerful, they allow you to condense complex information into something that’s quick to digest, easy to understand, and impactful at a glance. Simple, clear visuals with compelling messaging can cut through the noise, align your people and create a shared reality.

If creating graphics isn’t your strength and you have an internal Communications or Marketing team, consider involving them. They might be able to help you with design - perhaps in exchange for support on one of their projects. And remember, you don’t need specific design software - tools like PowerPoint or Canva are perfect for creating clear, impactful visuals. If you’d rather start with ready-made tools, editable versions of my visuals are available in the High Impact HR Transformation Templates.

Successful comms isn’t an afterthought, or something bolted on at the end. Build it into your plan from day one - because that’s when your comms needs to start.

Sustainable transformation isn’t about pushing harder, it’s about bringing your people with you. So, if you want change that lasts, don’t try to enforce it - inspire it.

Takeaway Tips

1 - Inspire change instead of trying to enforce it and bring your people with you.

2 - Help people connect to the purpose and show what’s in it for them.

3 - Change only sticks if people see it, hear it and feel it – that’s the true power of comms.
