THE TECH CHECK

A practical sense check

before investing in new technology

Before you invest in new technology - set yourself up for success

Technology carries a huge weight of expectation across our HR functions and organisations. Too often, we hope that the latest solution - with all its features and promises, will fix our biggest problems. But as extraordinary as technology is, it’s still only one part of the picture. And we cannot expect technology alone to resolve our challenges without putting in the groundwork - we need to take a holistic view. The problem is, so often we expect it to be the complete solution - and in doing so, we overlook the hard, human work that makes transformation stick. We invest in the tool, but forget the thinking, clarity and foundation-building that’s required to make it successful and sustainable.

When that happens, tech doesn’t improve the system. It accelerates its dysfunction. Poor processes, disconnected teams, misguided decisions, underinvestment in people and change. You can’t automate your way out of problems like these.

So, before you roll out a new AI tool, or layer in the next piece of software, take a step back. Map the reality it’s about to inherit. Because technology amplifies whatever it’s plugged into. If the foundations aren’t strong, things won’t get better - they’ll just break faster. But if your people practices are human-centred, that humanity can scale.

To unlock the true power of technology, we have to do the real work first:

1 - Simplify complexity - remove legacy barriers that slow you down.

2 - Design around people - shape tools and processes to work that way your people do.

3 - Align with purpose - focus on business outcomes, not shiny tech.

4 - Lead with inclusion - build for all your people, not just the loudest voices.

When we reframe through this lens, the question then becomes “how can technology help us?” It’s the enabler. When blended with a focus on business value and organisational collaboration, technology becomes the catalyst. It helps us to augment our solutions, to automate, personalise and scale. That’s when the real magic happens.

The question isn’t “What tech should we buy?”. The real questions are:

1 - What business problem are we actually trying to solve?

2 - Have we fixed our foundations to support the change?

3 - What’s missing in our systems, behaviours or mindset that no tool alone can fix?

4 - Is our organisation ready for this shift?

Because real transformation isn’t a tech solution alone. Its tech enabled, and that changes everything.
